Throughout all these successful years of PSL, teams are led by hardworking coaches. Every year, the PSL team’s coaches are finalized on contracts. The most prominent coaches in PSL history are:-

Moin Khan

The head coach of Quetta Gladiators, Moin Khan, is renowned in the cricket world and our first pick from the Top 6 Coaches of PSL History. His cricket career is shining brightly with his achievements and records. He is primarily a wicketkeeper-batsman who remained a member of the Pakistan National cricket team from 1990 to 2004 and has also captained the Pakistani side.

His fans remember him with the legends like Imran Khan and Waseem Akram. Facing all the ups and downs in his career, he still has well-defined figures that shun criticism and hatred. He has scored over 6000 runs in his career and about 400 hundred dismissals. Categorically he played 69 test matches in which he made 2741 runs and has 148 dismissals to his name. 

Moin Khan also has good records in ODI; he scored 3266 runs, took over 200 catches, and made 287 dismissals in his ODI career. He also has good experience in the thrilling format of T20 cricket. In 2005 Moin scored his first T20 century and smashed 112 in just 59 balls. 

Moin Khan’s coaching career started in 2014 when he was appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan National Team. He also coached Hyderabad Heros in the Indian Cricket League. Moin’s name shines to glory when he becomes a coach for PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators. Since the first season of the Quetta Gladiators till present, he has been the team’s head coach. 

Under his coaching, Quetta Gladiators have qualified for the semi-finals. And Quetta Gladiators were runner-ups consecutively for the PSL in both seasons.

Wasim Akram

A former cricketer Wasim Akram will always be remembered for his dedication to cricket in the years to come. He is one of the finest cricketers of the Pakistan National Team who has made his name through his strenuous efforts and best performances on the cricket ground.  

Wasim Akram got limelight as a fast bowler. He is a perfect bowler, has a mastery of swinging and bouncing the ball, and sometimes moves the ball both ways in one delivery. Many have rated Akram as the best left-arm fast bowler of all time. So, he is known as the “Swing of the Sultan.” 

His 414 Test and 502 ODI wickets are proof of him being the most fearsome fast bowler of his generation. His 2,898 Test and 3,717 ODI runs bracket him with a select group of the finest all-rounders who have graced this great game.

He finished his career as Pakistan’s top wicket-taker in both Tests and ODIs. Wasim Akram started a career in coaching in 2010 when he was appointed the bowling consultant of Kolkata Knight Riders. Akram has also been coaching in Pakistan fast bowling camps, his most notable discovery being the teenage Pakistani bowlers Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan. 

As a Coach, Wasim has served Pakistan National Team and PSL. He has also worked as director and bowling coach of PSL franchise Islamabad United during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He has also worked with Multan Sultans as director and bowling coach and is currently chairman and bowling coach of Karachi Kings.

Aqib Javed

It was not easy to reach excellence among contemporary players like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Still, Aqib Javed, with his impressive bowling skills, emerged as a significant player and one of the Top 6 Coaches of PSL History. Pakistani cricket coach and former cricketer was a right-handed fast-medium-pace bowler who could swing the ball both ways.

He played 22 Tests and 163 ODI for Pakistan between 1988 and 1998. He was a part of the Pakistan team, which won the 1992 Cricket World Cup. His career ended amidst match-fixing crises. He went into coaching after retiring from cricket. He is currently serving as the director of cricket operations and head coach of the Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars.

Since 2016, he has been the bowling consultant for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League. In December 2017, he was appointed the team’s head coach. Under his coaching, Lahore Qalandars won the title after six years of continuous struggle and will now be the defending champion in PSL 2023. 

Dean Jones

A well-reputed Australian cricketer, Dean Jones revolutionized the ODI format. He has contributed a lot to Australian cricket. He possesses impressive batting and bowling stats, but primarily he is a right-handed top-order batter.

Looking at the ranking chart, Jones is regarded as a gritty, attacking player. He made 3631 runs at an average of 46.55 in 52 Tests, while in 164 ODIs, he made 6068 runs, at 44.61, with seven hundred and 46 fifties. Dean also remains No.5 on the all-time ICC Batting Rankings in the format.

He had a significant impact on the game of cricket as a player, as an advocate for the development of the sport as a coach, and, latterly, in his role as a broadcaster. He began his coaching career as the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). 

Islamabad United won the 2016 and 2018 Pakistan Super Leagues during his reign. In November 2019, Jones became head coach of PSL team Karachi Kings, replacing Mickey Arthur ahead of the 5th edition of the Pakistan Super League.

Andy Flowers

One of the best wicket-keepers and batters in the world, Andy will forever be remembered for his unmatched dedication to the Zimbabwean cricket team for ten long years. The Flower was ranked as the best Test batsman in the world.

Flower scored 4794 runs at an average of 51.54 across 63 Tests and made 6786 runs at a 35.34 average rate across 213 ODI. He made 316 dismissals as a keeper. He has excelled as a wicketkeeper. 

Zimbabwean player Andy Flower certainly has the alluring capability to be a Coach. In 2016, he was appointed as the batting coach for Peshawar Zalmi for his exceptional talent. He was chosen to be the head coach of Multan Sultans in 2020.  

Under his tenure, Flower led the Multan Sultans to their first-ever playoffs in the 2020 season. The Sultans finished first in the league stage but ultimately lost in the preliminaries. 

Muhammad Akram

PSL has witnessed some great players, and they have proved themselves as one of the finest mentors guiding the team throughout the tournament. Muhammad Akram is one of them. Although his cricket career is limited, his coaching career has brought him immense success. 

He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler who played 9 Test matches and 23 ODI matches for Pakistan between 1995–1996 and 2000-2001. Although his cricket career got shadowed by some significant players like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Shoaib Akhtar, he was a valuable man to have as a backup for any team. 

On 24 August 2012, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Mohammad Akram as their bowling coach on a one-year contract. In April 2013, Akram was also involved in a 10-day training camp for top fast bowlers with Wasim Akram at National Stadium Karachi. 

He is the current Director of Cricket and bowling coach for the Pakistan Super League team Peshawar Zalmi. In the mentorship of Muhammad Akram, Peshawar Zalmi has performed so well and bagged the title once.
