IPL 2023: BCCI Set to Introduce “Impact Players” Rule

Impact Players can replace any member of the initial XI before the end of the 14th over in either inning. BCCI Set to Introduce “Impact Players” Rule – a tactical replacement. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which ended last month, was the first competition when the Board implemented the rule. The rule allows a side to make a strategic substitution during each game.

IPL 2023 is approaching, IPL rules are changing, and authorities are modifying them. On Thursday, the IPL’s governing council members meet virtually to discuss the launch of the Impact Player concept. Coaches and athletes on the domestic circuit gave the option, which is similar to a player substitution in football, positive reviews.

On Thursday, the BCCI sent a message to the teams. And they informed them of the strategic concept’s introduction to the cash-rich league.

“Note that from IPL 2023 Season a tactical/strategic concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active part in an IPL match. The regulations pertaining to the same will be issued shortly,” according to the BCCI’s note to franchises.

“The BCCI would like to introduce the concept of ‘Impact Player’ wherein participating teams could replace one member of its playing XI during a T20 match based on the context of the game,” the statement said.

The Impact Player can perform any role during the game. However, this rule is not applicable when the game is shortened to less than 10 overs for each side.

Hrithik Shokeen, an all-rounder for Delhi, was the first Impact Player of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He helped his side defeat Manipur by scoring 71 runs in a group league game in Jaipur in October.
